RRC snorkel at a reasonable price!

Hello M-C'ers,

Just a litle tip on getting yourself a reasonablely priced snorkel for your RRC, mine is a 300 Tdi of 1994 vintage.
I bought myself a Defender one off ebay (check out kopdaz)
He sold me a Defender snorkel for £65 & P&P which worked out to be £73.

It's the type that fits onto the side vent of the Defenders, low down on the wing.

O.K so I cut off about four inches of pipe from the part that goes onto the vent,
this is because the bend in the pipe is past flush with the plate.
I curled the plate slightly to fit onto the profile on the side of the scuttle board,
I cut out enough of the side of the scuttle board to allow my flexible pipe to pass through.
I then fitted the flexible pipe inside the pipe on the plate, from the inside and sealed with mastic.
I then fed the flexi pipe down to the filter box and had to cut off the Bugle type opening on the air infeed pipe,
Now fit the flexi pipe over the air infeed pipe and seal with mastic & a hose clip. (seal the filter box while you're at it!)
Drill and fit the plate to the scuttle board now,
Keep the pipe pointing level backwards,
Now fit the metal down pipe to the door pillar,
make sure the distance between the bottom of the pipe and the end of the panel pipe are less than the length of rubber pipe, probably allow and inch and  half overlap both ends.
I rivited the brackets on to the door pillar with water proof rivits.
Fit the rubber flexible pipe you get wiith the kit to both metal pipes,
Fit the top filter attachment,
and Bob's your uncle!

It looks the dogs danglies.

Photos can be sent via email if you want a look.
But it does not take too much to work it out.
The total job took me about two hours.

Ronnie...........I wonder if i could do something similar with my V8 ? I was going to b&q and seeing what I could lash together. You know, table leg here, cable tie there maybe a bit of vacuum hose

Its easy!! I did mine using a snorkel top from eblag for £28 and a bit of alloy pipe also from eblag £10, cut through the scuttle panel and used some door seal to trim the hole and then some flexi pipe to attach to the filter box which as of yet I havent got

Mine is similar, southdown top on some 2 1/2" polished stainless tube (aquired through work  ) with brackets tig welded on.
Also needing some flexi pipe to finish

yes you could do that but it would not look half as good as mine.
B&Q has a pensioners day on a Thursday so you might even be able to get your table legs cheaper then!

My snorkel was on the car when we bought it, but never connected up.  This is my protortype airbox during a little experiment to prove that ram air effect is bunk.

I used a Defender 90 snorkel from Rebel that I already had from a previous project. I discarded the bottom steel pipe that connects on to the outside of the wing. I made a bracket fitted to the side of the windscreen pillar with self tapping screws. I then attached two clamps to the steel which has a curve at the top so that is vertical and attached it to the bracket.

Next job was to cut a hole in the top of the scuttle and fit a flexible rubber pipe (I used the pipe from a defender turbo diesel that connects the air intake on the wing to the air filter) that is long enough to go though the scuttle and in to the engine compartment. A piece of black plastic drain pipe is the right size to fit inside the rubber pipe and that runs to the front of the engine. I cut off the end of the intake on the air box and fitted the flexible pipe from the original kit on the end of the plastic pipe and sealed it to the inlet pipe on the airbox and tightened the jubilee clip.

All the joints are sealed. breather tubes from front axle, and gearboxes also go up to the top of the snorkel. One breather pipe that is worth mentioning comes over the cross member in front of the fuel tank and clips on to the chassis I am told that it is a breather for the fuel pump and you don't want water in there!! I took mine up into the back body and out through air vent on the offside rear panel. Should be safe up to roof height. It is not a good idea to keep it inside as the vehicle fills up with petrol fumes.

Hello Hilltop,

What type of pipe did you use to legthen the breather pipes,
H.P. air pipe?
What connections did you use,
the snap-on H.P air type?

I've been loking at that pipe on the filler tube on my RRC,
I was under the impression that it might be the tank breather,
No matter what it is it is worth putting it higher!

I'll do the Axle breather & gear box breather when I get the pipe,

I got new breather pipes from Llama 4x4, its a good place for longer brake pipes too, Dave will make them up to any length you require and also put on mail or female connectors as you require. I have fitted the front and rear axles but having difficulty finding a way to get to the connectors on the gearbox so may have to consider joining but I would prefer to replace as on piece.

The breather pipe that I was talking about is not the tank breather, you have to get under the vehicle to see it. It is clipped inside the offside chassis rail. If you have difficulty finding it I will take a photograph when it comes back from the welder.

For axle/gearbox breathers just use B&Q garden irrigation pipe, its about 6mm dia and you can get connectors for it to join it to the ogiginal breatherl, mine works great.
